Guru awakens from coma, makes statement to press

Sources are confirming that former Gang Starr rapper Guru has come out of the coma he slipped into after suffering a heart attack late last week. He underwent a surgical procedure on Tuesday.

In the brief statement, Guru confirmed that he is recovering, and that point man for inquiries on his health will be his current producer and partner Solar.

“I am doing fine and I am recovering! I’m weak though,” Guru said. “Solar is the only person who has the accurate info on my situation. Any info from anybody else is false! I appreciate your well wishes and all the love!”

Solar relayed the following: “Guru is resting and doing well after his surgery. The doctors say that he will fully recover from his illness. We thank everyone who send prayers our way and we appreciate the outpouring of love from around the world!”

The statement came as a shock to some, who felt it was a shot at long-time Gang Starr partner DJ Premier, who had been fielding questions and providing status updates on his old partner’s well-being.

All of us here at Hit The Decks wish Guru godspeed in his recovery.

Rapper Guru falls into coma after suffering cardiac arrest

Many sources are reporting that Keith “Guru” Elam, one-half of legendary hip hop act Gang Starr, has fallen into a coma after suffering a heart attack. The initial news has reported by Elam’s sister.

Details are sketchy at present, and we’ll continue to update this blog entry as news trickles in. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Guru’s family and friends.

UPDATE: DJ Premier, Guru’s Gang Starr partner, confirmed the news in a phone call to Hip Hop Nation yesterday. “Guru is in a coma and will go under surgery tomorrow (Monday) afternoon.”
