Fans of the lauded multimedia project from Damon Albairn and Jamie Hewlett got a double-shot of good news today, when the band was named closing night headliners of this year’s Coachella Music Festival, AND the first single from their forthcoming “Plastic Beach” album, “Stylo”, leaked to the internet.
The announcement of the coveted headlining date marks the first public performance by the band since their Apollo Theater run in April 2006, which was documented by MHD (now Palladia).
As if this wasn’t enough good news, the Twitter page for Murdoch Niccals, bassist and resident lunatic, announced yesterday with much aplomb
“A leak! A leak! Plastic Beach has sprung a leak! One of those Russian pirates has put a bullet hole on my island! My single’s leaked! STYLO!”
In typical Murdoch fashion, he later responded
The new single features legendary soul singer Bobby Womack (“Across 110th Street”, for Jackie Brown fans) and new band member Sun Moon Stars, who sounds suspiciously like Mos Def. Other artists appearing on Plastic Beach include Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Gruff Rhys, Mark E. Smith, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon (of The Clash), Kano, Bashy, De La Soul, Little Dragon, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Sinfonia Viva, and The National Orchestra for Arabic Music
“Stylo” will be available for download on January 26, with the full-length coming March 9th. We’ll do our best to score an interview with Murdoch, 2D, Noodle & Russell closer to the release date.
